The Code Editor lets you edit theme and plugin files directly from the admin panel - HTML templates, CSS, JavaScript, JSON and text files such as robots.txt.

Open it from the admin menu under Themes → Code editor (it is also used by plugins, e.g. the SEO plugin's schema templates and robots.txt editing link to it).

What you can edit

The editor works on the folders that make up your site's front-end:

  • themes/ - the active theme's HTML, CSS and JS files
  • plugins/ - public assets of installed plugins
  • public/ - site-level files like robots.txt / vrobots.txt

A file tree on the left lets you browse directories; clicking a file loads it with syntax highlighting.

Safety rules

To protect the site from accidental breakage:

  • Executable extensions cannot be saved (php, tpl, phtml, htaccess, exe, phar, …)
  • Files are saved in place - create a backup before bulk edits
  • Changes to theme HTML trigger recompilation of templates so changes appear immediately

Tips

  • Use the editor for small tweaks; for larger development work edit files on disk with your own tools
  • After saving a .css/.js file, clear the assets cache from Cache if changes don't appear
  • Plugin-provided files (like SEO schema templates) are documented by each plugin
