Origins and evolution

Vvveb CMS grew out of a long‑running effort to rethink how websites should be built and edited.

The project began as an exploration into creating a visual page builder that offered complete freedom, no locked‑in layouts, no rigid blocks, and no hidden constraints.

The first milestone of that exploration was VvvebJS, the open‑source visual editor released in 2017, which introduced a drag‑and‑drop interface capable of editing any HTML structure.

Building on that foundation, the full CMS was developed to combine the visual editor with a modern backend, extensible architecture, and ecommerce capabilities.

After several years of development, the first public beta of Vvveb CMS was released in February 2023, marking the transition from a page‑builder experiment to a complete, production‑ready platform.

Commitment to open source

Vvveb is fully open source and licensed under the AGPL license, ensuring that the software remains free and that improvements benefit the entire community.

The license protects the Four Essential Freedoms of Free Software, allowing anyone to:

Use: The freedom to use the program for any purpose.

Study: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.

Share: The freedom to redistribute and make copies so you can help your neighbor.

Improve: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

This philosophy is central to Vvveb’s identity. The ability to inspect, modify, and extend the codebase is not an afterthought, it is a core design principle.

Free to use, share, and build upon

Vvveb places no restrictions on how the software is used or shared.

Whether you are building a personal website, a commercial ecommerce store, or a custom enterprise solution, the CMS remains free and open.

Themes, plugins, and customizations can be created without licensing barriers, making Vvveb suitable for agencies, freelancers, and developers who need full control over their tools.

Contributors and stewardship

Vvveb CMS and VvvebJS are founded and led by Ziadin Givan, a developer driven by a passion for open-source software and elegant, lightweight code.

The project thrives on community contributions. Whether you are reporting a bug, suggesting a feature, or submitting a pull request, you are helping build a more open web.
